THERE ARE NO BERRIES ON THE EXODUS (2023)

The idea for this film came from my interest in the study of ‘Neomedievalism,’ in particular it’s popularity within video games.

Neomedievalism can be described as a romanticised view of the western middle ages, combined with fantasy elements such as magic. It has endured centuries as a form of entertainment, from the wistful paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites, to the vast works of Tolkien, to popular RPGs such as World of Warcraft and Skyrim. In my research I found many fascinating essays discussing the topic and the factors influencing and shaping it's lasting popularity.

In this piece I wanted to consider how the neomedieval genre may endure to a time where the majority of it’s elements have become completely foreign to players. Where even the smallest details, such as the feel of grass or the taste of wild fruit, carry a sense of magic and wonder.
